Christians have done this so many times in the history of Christianity--more or less constantly since the Roman Empire-- that it can't be regarded as the exception to the rule. (It's no use saying that Christianity has been, historically, no worse than Judaism, Islam, fascism, communism, etc. The key fact is that it has been no better. Every authoritarian belief system involves believers willing to destroy the unorthodox, by whatever violent means are necessary.)
