American cardinal says his own mother is 'embarrassed to be Catholic'

You know the scandals in the Catholic Church are bad when a leading American cardinal says his own mother is ashamed to show her faith in public.

That's what Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York told CNN's Christiane Amanpour on Thursday.

"You don't think that did me in?" said Dolan, often one of the more cheery American churchmen.

"When my mom says -- she's in assisted living -- she said: I'm not going out for lunch, I'm kind of embarrassed to be Catholic."

It's a month old, but I wonder if Al Capone and John Gotti ever had trouble getting their mothers to be seen with them in public.

On whether homosexuality played a role in the church's sex abuse crisis: "I don't think that's the sole root of it." And a generous concession to atheists as the lowest rung of moral decency: "I don't care if you have no faith. You know that that is vicious, that's diabolical. You don't do it."

I know Tony Soprano lived in a fictional world of fubar morality and had a difficult relationship with his mother. Maybe Dolan has a lot in common with him, too?

Someone here pointed out that even the liberal churches, the ones with female pastors and lots of rainbow flags and group participation if they were truly following Jesus would be raging against the patriarchal church-factories. They wouldn't be playing the guitar and singing about "Brother Tree".

It's time to pack the whole scheme in.. Or at least come up with a different name than "Christianity" and "Christians".

Kind of like being a "made man" for the mafia, you have to prove your loyalty before the big bucks come.
