ATLANTA -- The Morehouse School of Medicine is creating what is being called the first endowed chair on sexuality and religion at a U.S. medical school.
The Atlanta medical school on Thursday announced it raised $2 million for the endowed chair, and it will begin a one-year national search to hire someone to fill it.
The chairperson will develop ways to train physicians and theologians on a wide range of sexual health issues that include contraception, rape prevention, unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
The chair will report to Dr. David Satcher, a former U.S. Surgeon General who issued a controversial report on sexual health in 2001. Satcher is now a Morehouse administrator.

I take that to indicate that the chairperson will be attempting to provide theologians with the best scientific understanding of these issues so that they may make their pronouncements based on fact rather than myth. Considering that some teachings on sexuality date back to a time when it was thought that the male implanted a tiny human into a female, theologians can use the help!

(325 posts)Religion, is a mental exercise engaged in by only one species, according to our present knowledge.
I am at a loss as to how these two phenomena, with one solely observed only in homo sapiens, which do not directly connect to one another, are worthy of graduate level platitudinal research. One has to do with species communication and reproduction, the other has to do with mental gymnastics engaged-in by some but not all within a singular species, and most within the species do not engage in those mental gymnastics in a similar way. There are over 3000 separate mental gymnastics within the homo sapiens species, but all means of physical contact and communication and reproduction are virtually identical within the entire species over tens of thousands of years. The mental gymnastics seem to change every half century or so within that one species capable of mental gymnastics, and those changes have little at all to do with the sexual behaviors.
Sort of like comparing apples and glaciers, one comes about every so frequently, once a week or a year or a decade, the other looks the same and moves and behaves in the same manner for thousands or tens of thousands of years, uninfluenced by how many apples are on a tree somewhere.
