It allows many people to engage in extremely dangerous situations content in the conveniently unverifiable promise of reward if they fall in combat. Not all need it, but for those who do most governments are more than happy to facilitate the fairy tale because ultimately it serves their objectives.

more of a "personal" and "private" reflection by our soldiers who find themselves in harms way, as opposed to a nationally-sanctioned religious "reward" for services rendered. But I totally see what you were getting at. Thank you for reading and for your comment. Much appreciated.

I get what the article was about, but I just don’t get the same warm fuzzy about it. I see it more as people who cling to mythology when faced with dire circumstances and someone else who takes advantage of their vulnerability by using an overly romanticized notion of the situation to promote a religion that further victimized them to begin with.

It creates opportunities for persecution and hate. Let's not gloss over the blood and death aspect it is abhorrent and , yes, unnatural. Never Forget.

I see you are new to DU so I will give you a heads up. There are about a dozen forums in the Religion/Spirituality group. Most are safe havens for people to post about their beliefs without getting pushback or arguments.
But the Religion Forum, this one, is a no holds bar discussion/debate about all things religious. Many of us who post here are atheist/agnostic and don't hold religion in a favorable light.
There is nothing wrong with what you post, but if you want a more welcoming talk about faith, one of the other Religion/Spirituality Forums might serve you better.
Welcome to DU.
