Participants from Utah, Arizona, Idaho and elsewhere gathered in a public park to sign a "Declaration of Independence from Mormonism."
-snip-
The church bills itself as the one "true" Christian faith, and its theology promises families eternal relationships among those who remain faithful, sealing those gifts through special religious rites.
Among the reasons cited by those resigning are the church's political activism against gay marriage and doctrinal teachings that conflict with scientific findings or are perceived as racist or sexist.

I would hope that liberal/progressive Catholics are able to see the parallels here. These people have not abandoned their faith, they have abandoned the patriarchal hierarchy that is holding them (and the rest of us) back. THIS is the change we need.

Oh, and I'll just ignore your attempt to paint my comments as some kind of personal attack, which is laughable. You really have it in for me, don't you.

(10,618 posts)You can never be an ex-Catholic. The best you can hope for is to be a recovering Catholic. (And I quit in 1959)

(26,249 posts).....the way I see it, I never asked to be baptised and had ZERO choice in the whole 'confirmation' nonsense.
Got no issue with the baptism - it's an insurance policy - but forcing 10 year olds to confim their life long 'allegiance' to ANY organization is ridiculous. Would never hold up in a court of law. Therefore, I QUIT!!!

(12,644 posts)I quit and I am no more Catholic than someone who has never set foot in a Catholic church. I have absolutely no connection to the church, haven't been to a Mass since high school (so almost a decade) and was even baptized again in my new church a few months ago. It's an organization of no relevance to me. "Recovering Catholic" implies I have something to recover from. I've recovered, and I'm done.

(12,644 posts)Not too long after I was confirmed actually. In fact back in February I was actually baptized again, in my new church. So in a sense I did make sort of a statement of me quitting.
