(7,515 posts)"flamebait" Is that the expression used to describe an OP whose only function and purpose is to irritate others? As you can see I'm fairly new to DU and still have much to learn.
rug
(82,333 posts)It is something posted purely to provoke reactions which devolve into flames.
It is usually accompanied by a dog whistle with tittering from the sidelines.
This one is an old classic.

(7,515 posts)I really appreciate when someone takes the time to answer my question. It took about 6 "asks" before anyone would explain n/t to me.

Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No, it's not "religious bigotry." This is an opinion piece discussing religious themes in science fiction, with a snarky title.
Interesting that it's on an alert made 18 hours after it was posted.
Nicely worded gaming of the jury system.
Now, show me the smear.

(3,622 posts)and as far as the OP that was hidden I decided not to partake in the discussion. The article gave me a bad taste in my mouth when I read it so I stayed out of it.
I have no clue has to who alerted on the thread, why it took 18 hours (as you posted) to alert on the thread nor do I care. In all fairness you did set yourself up for the response I gave!
cleanhippie
(19,705 posts)But I am not a christian. I found the article interesting and appropriate for this group. Is there a problem with that?

(7,515 posts)with no real explanation as to the "why" other than the usual fear of the unknown.
I grew up in a fundamental church. I've read the Bible through, several times. The only truly devout person I have ever known was an elderly Jewish man with whom I was acquainted in the early 1970s.

(19,705 posts)Fear is a powerful emotion, and religion has harnessed that power. Quite effectively.
Sekhmets Daughter
(7,515 posts)I grew up with 'fire and brimstone" and when my head finally won the 50-year-long battle with my heart, I attained freedom from fear. Strange how that works isn't it?
So you put up that article in order to lure the uninitiated, like myself, into a senseless discussion? Glad I took a pass.
cleanhippie
(19,705 posts)But since you saw it that way, I'm glad you did too.
Hopefully we will meet in another thread and have a more fruitful discussion. Might I recommend posting your own OPs that will generate the conversations you would like to have?
Until next time, my friend.

I think I may have been one of the earliest to read your OP and follow the link. There was nothing more from you at the time. While I don't buy into any of the desert dogmas, or any other religion for that matter, I never go on the offense and will only occasionally play defense when some fool is aggressively trying to sell his/her particular line of BS.
I am always curious about why people believe, which is why I read your OP to begin with.... My decision to make no comment was based on the fact that there was nothing new in the article.
I look forward to seeing you again....
cleanhippie
(19,705 posts)Really. You and I have had little interaction up until now, I just didn't want to poison any future conversations we may have.
