(6,045 posts)I think it had to do with how Agnostics, not all, but many do consider any criticism of religion to be rude. If the cartoon was representing something else then I missed it.

(14,498 posts)Agnostics are not... by any definition that I ever heard... polite ( or wimpy) atheists.
Agnostics will variously self -define but a pretty mainstream definition is the conviction that what one can't know, one can't know. The existence of god (s) is unknowable therefore..........
That's not atheism and it certainly isn't "polite" or "wimpy" or , to quote myself, "dishonest".

(6,045 posts)Agnostics are really Atheist who don't want to offend religious people...If so, I would agree there are Agnostics like that who think any criticism of religion by non-believers is rude.

(49,533 posts)But we ARE able to judge the validity of certain claims, aren't we? Would you put on a suit of armor and grab a sword before entering your garage if someone told you there was a dragon in it? I mean, you don't *know* that there isn't one in there! How dare you be so presumptuous as to claim there isn't?

(1 post)First of all just want to let everyone know, I am not new to Democratic Underground. I have been around since DU first started, have had a couple accounts and for various reasons such as couldn't remember a generic password DU used to give people, I just quit posting and mostly just lurk. This post compelled me to comment.
My point is I consider myself to be agnostic since I don't absolutely discount the possibility of God but I lean more toward the evolution theory of existence. I am quite known for letting religious people, even people very close to me, know when they are being hypocrites or just plain stupid. My husband on the other hand leans more atheist and he is less likely to say something to offend someone about any issue. Maybe this cartoon is stereotyping people too much, I believe it has more to do with personality than beliefs.

(49,533 posts)(A)gnosticism vs. (A)theism is a matter of knowledge versus belief. You don't have to be one or the other, there are combinations of each.
