Representative Tim Scott has been tapped to replace Senator Jim DeMint in the US Senate. The 47-year-old becomes the first Black Senator from the South since the 19th Century, but that does not mean that he is any more open to LGBT rights than his predecessor. Scott has a zero rating with the Human Rights Campaign. Scott has refused to sponsor or vote for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act or the Respect for Marriage Act.
Scott has, in the past, asserted his support for marriage bigotry and his campaign website stated The institution of marriage is the unity of one man and one woman. Allowing the government to weaken the definition of marriage takes away from our children and we must not allow that to happen.
Scott will be a Senator until 2014 when he must run in a special election for a full term.
The former insurance agent is closely associated with Dan Cathy, the CEO of Chick-fil-A. While some Conservatives and Liberals are saying that none could truly replace DeMint, it has been noted that Scott is a very much a Religious Conservative.
