Upstate Atheists, a Spartanburg, S.C., group that focuses on helping people in need, recently offered to help out at the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen, but their gesture was rebuffed by the Christian nonprofit, even though they had agreed to not wear their T-shirts or advertise where they were from, the Spartanburg Herald-Journal reported.
"This is a ministry to serve God, Lou Landrum, executive director of the soup kitchen, told the paper. "We stand on the principles of God. Do they (atheists) think that our guests are so ignorant that they don't know what an atheist is? Why are they targeting us? They don't give any money. I wouldn't want their money."

(43,049 posts)the people running them would never, ever turn down help from atheists, or anyone else who didn't share their beliefs. We don't ask the hungry about their religion, either. We'll give them some religious comfort if they ask for it, but never push it on them.
Now, maybe if there were avowed Satanists in full devil drag dropping by to help we might be a bit suspicious.
Other than that, we take the good samaritan thing very seriously. Even if our "samaritan" doesn't believe the story about the samaritan.
Part of being a good Christian is not being in a hurry to judge who is or isn't a good Christian, but I might take a guess about the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen crew.
