Canadian Fire Spares Polytheist’s Altar and Shrine

SAINT ALBERT, Alberta – When a fire nearly engulfed a Canadian polytheist’s cabin, not only was the structure spared, but so was an altar and shrine to his ancestors and Brighid, both of which were, and still are, tucked in the woods.

Mhaoillain and his wife were enjoying a lazy Sunday afternoon on the deck of their cabin, located in the woods near Saint Albert when they heard a voice call out for help with a fire.

“At first, I thought it was some stupid joke, as the whole of Alberta has been under a strict fire ban for weeks, and considering the recent devastation in Fort MacMurray, in northern Alberta, why would anyone purposefully start a fire?” said Mhaoillain in an interview with The Wild Hunt.

Then he heard the voice call out again saying that there was a fire. Mhaoillain said that he ran through the wooded area to the end of his property and was met with a growing brush fire. It was quickly spreading onto his property and up his very dry trees.

That's not too far from me. It reminds me of another altar of sorts that was left alone this spring...

Near Ft. McMurray, there was a roadside memorial that was spared by the fire...This woman had set up the memorial to her nephew who had died in a car accident on the highway...typical set up with a cross and she mentioned on national TV that she used to make sure there was pot at the memorial for her nephew's friends go to and smoke a joint with him from time to time. It was a place they all went to talk with him. When they evacuated, the fire was headed right for the community and that spot on the highway. While she was still far away from home, someone sent CBC news a picture of the memorial and all around it had burned...but the memorial itself was left untouched...let's see if I can find a link to that article...not sure if my American friends will be able to watch it (CBC is often blocked). Might need a proxy.
