Nine percent of Americans say neo-Nazi and white supremacist views are acceptable, according to a new survey conducted in the days after the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville.
While an overwhelming 83% of Americans said they opposed the far-right ideology, 9% said it was acceptable. The remaining 8% said they had no opinion, according to a Washington Post- ABC poll.
The poll surveyed 1,014 adults after neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other far-right groups descended on Charlottesville, where James Alex Fields Jr., allegedly drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer.
President Trump faced a swift backlash for attributing the violence in Charlottesville to both sides and members of his own party publicly criticized his response.
Eight percent had no opinion. WTF. That's almost as disturbing as the 9% figure.

(37,481 posts)They don't specify the missing 1%. So they either made a pretty big math error or they just didn't specify that remaining 1% somehow.
eta: Page two of this has the exact question and figures

eta2: They probably rounded up to 9%. Also, I didn't really get your original question. Yes, it makes sense. Way too many anti-semites and racists out there, and of course one is too many.

(37,481 posts)If you are completely clueless about politics and 20th century history, it's probably baffling and intimidating to have some pollster ask you that question. It would be like asking me a very advanced technical question about the Large Hadron Collider.

(56,212 posts)The number goes even higher when you strip away some of the more violent ideology. Anti-Semites are about 12-15% in this country, about the same number in regards to racists (as it relates to African-Americans). If I remember correctly, it is slightly higher in regards to racist attitudes toward Latinos/Hispanics, but by only a few percentage points.
I agree the "no opinion" number is as disturbing as the "acceptable" number.
While these numbers seem relatively low, they can change quickly, and there are many more who may not "agree" but are what I term, "sympathetic" to bigotry (various kinds).
