Menashe, the movie

Never heard of it but last week we went to the multiplex (saw Dunkirk) and noticed it playing there.

It was at a regular theater, not an art one, did not know when it came to town but knew that it was going to end Thursday and that's when we saw it.

It is about a very closed knit Hassidic Jews in Brooklyn where the rabbi runs the lives of everyone. Menashe is a widower but, until he remarries, he cannot raise his young son who is now at the home of a family member. Plus, poor Menashe is both a shlumiel and shlimazel. And it is in Yiddish with English subtitles.

So... went to read about it, was quite successful at the Sundance festival, came out last July to rave reviews. We were not sure, a bit dismayed at the stifling life but the critics love it.

There is an interesting interview from NPR. None of the actors are actors.
