16-year-old Jewish girl allegedly told to be patient, Jews come last by Stamford Hill shopkeeper

A 16-year-old Jewish girl has allegedly been told by a shopkeeper in Stamford Hill in North East London to “be patient, Jews come last.”

The alleged incident took place on Wednesday between 17:30 and 18:00 at a shop which has a drop-off service for parcels, acting as an agent for online shops. The Jewish schoolgirl was dropping off items with the female shopkeeper, but in the middle of serving her the shopkeeper allegedly stopped and started serving another customer. The Jewish schoolgirl asked politely if she could just have her receipt so that she could leave, to which the shopkeeper allegedly replied: “be patient, Jews come last.”

Stamford Hill Shomrim, the volunteer neighbourhood watch patrol, is assisting the young girl who was shocked and felt very hurt by the alleged antisemitic comment. Stamford Hill Shomrim has reported the incident to the police and referred the case to Campaign Against Antisemitism for assistance.

unless she knew the girl personally? the article gave no clue.

So sad to read that this kind of behavior is making a comeback worldwide.

How does anyone know if someone is Jewish, unless they tell you? I know that I don't.

Sometimes, it feels like people are just looking for something/someone to be against.

The boys and men wear kippot and a tallit katan, the part that shows are the tassles called tzitzit. If they are haredi they will sport payot (sidelocks) and are unshaven. Depending on the sect they might wear different kinds of hats over the kippa.

The women wear long skirts and a head covering like a scarf or wig depending on age and marriage status. The skirt is usually black and ankle length and the blouse is loose fitting and covers the elbows at least.

Even so, many people might know that they look and dress differently, but might not know that it is because they are Jewish. So many people in our society aren't all that worldly or well informed about other religions or customs.

I realize that the shopkeeper knew the girl was Jewish, I was just wondering how she knew that. Of course, I don't understand the way she behaved as well.

What behaviour would lead to a shop owner saying he serves Jews last?

I'm not being dan l'kaf zechus about this. He was being an antisemitic asshole.

I meant the shopkeeper. When I said that "I don't understand", I meant that I really don't understand antisemitism, especially in this day and age. Right now, I am just stunned by the outward expressions of hate and bigotry that we are seeing every day since Trump was elected. I am fearful that people might get used to it.

European countries seem to have a problem with not being able to let go of their hatred of Jews. It's not new and rarely surprising to me. I would not even consider living over there for anything. It's so bad in France that Canada saw a spike in immigration requests (Montreal has a large Orthodox community).

a guy I knew in England posted pictures of white nationalist demonstrations in London and I was really surprised. Little did I know at the time, that we would see such open discrimination here. The more things change, the more they stay the same it seems.

She could dress frum.

She could be wearing a Star of David or hamza necklace.

She could have a stereotypical look -- Europeans are much more accurate in guessing ethnicity than Americans. I typically wear a kippah, but even in a baseball cap I've been spotted as Jewish in Europe.

That is very interesting and something I was not aware of until recently. Somehow I had assumed that the world had evolved after World War II, especially Europe.

Many places that I have lived have been so multi-cultural that a "stereotypical look" often could be ascribed to various cultures or nationalities. Being a diverse country, differences in dress or jewelry tends to be rather commonplace, especially in urban areas.

We're mostly very much mutts, with a blend of ethnic origins, going on a couple of centuries. So we've learned (a bit) not to judge by appearance. There are a number of mixed-race Hispanic and Black members of my shul, for example, that'd you'd never say "oh, that guy's Jewish."

It has not always been so: I recently read a fascinating article about camps for ethnic Germans in the USA during WWI, similar to camps for Japanese in WWII which pretty much stamped out "German" as an ethnicity in the USA and made them "Pennsylvania Dutch" English speakers.

I worked with a young man named Tony. I assumed he was Hispanic or Italian, but turns out he was Iranian. I've learned never to judge by appearance, as so often we are wrong. I heard that when people immigrate to the U.S., they tend to assimilate better than in Europe. After the first generation, it is really difficult to tell their ethnicity. I had no idea that that wasn't the case in Europe.

Interesting about the "Pennsylvania Dutch" English speakers. Sadly, it is so easy to gin up hatred toward a group of people, especially during war time.

I've seen a lot of racism throughout my life, but over the years it had gotten better, until Trump was elected president. It is terrifying to see the rapid backslide.

It's a sign of absolute social degradation. Moral collapse. Right up there with child slavery and human sacrifice.

If there's a witness, the civil suit should, in a reasonable world, award the young woman the shop. The shopkeeper should be compelled in some fashion to spend the rest of this life making restitution. The penalties should be severe enough to drive that crap underground where it belongs.

then among other things the local Jews need to make certain none of them ever patronize that shop again.

But I am a bit suspicious. I believe that's an area with plenty of Jews, and so if the shopkeeper had a "Jews come last" policy, then this sort of thing would have happened before.
