The Labour veteran was shut down as she tried to make the joke, claiming that BBC's Andrew Neil would find it was "perfectly alright" - with the host immediately telling her to "be quiet".
The panel had been locked in a debate on Neil's late night politics show This Week, about whether making jokes about Adolf Hitler was acceptable.
Ms Harman then jumped in, saying she had been criticised as a "humourless feminist".
She said: "I'll give you two examples that I protested about because they were offensive and hurtful.
"This was a Guy's Hospital rag magazine back in the day and people like Andrew say that these things are perfectly alright."Two jokes - one was how do you get 100 Jews into a Mini - one in the driving seat, 99 in the ash tray.
"And that is not funny."
But Neil immediately stopped her, saying they would not continue with the second example - saying: "We won't bother with a minute's silence that you would dare to think what I would think about that because you have no knowledge of that at all."
When Ms Harman tried to again speak, Neil again shut her down, telling her: "be quiet".

(3,051 posts)I think what she was saying was the joke was NOT funny and it was an example of bad-intentioned humor.
I suppose in order to call it out for the bigotry that it is, you have to tell the joke.
On a lighter note, I'm glad she didn't tell the most dangerous joke in the world. That could have killed half of Britain.

(1,777 posts)The Sun is a RW Tory paper, and it's lying about Harman's comments.

(3,051 posts)But I can tell you their prose is impossible to follow.
I've read this about 10 times. Without the commentary here, I still would have no idea about what they are complaining.
grossproffit
(5,591 posts)is that the Labour party has a huge antisemitism problem. Jeremy Corbyn, it's leader, has referred to Hamas and Hezbollah as friends and just recently he refused to attend the Balfour 100 celebration.

(1,777 posts)If she made an unfair accusation against Neil, fine, that's a fair critique. But the implication in the headline of this shitty British tabloid is just "she made a vile joke."

(1,777 posts)It's what they do, and what our media do as well. The Sun headline was still deceptive. The intent was to make it appear that Harman was making an antisemitic joke with antisemitic intent -- and you put it up here without context. I happen to think that antisemitism in the Labour Party is a real issue, but this is spurious bullshit.
The fact that she said that the interviewer would find it funny -- that's something that she should apologize about. But hardly a pressing issue for the Jewish group.
