Re: Belgian law on kosher slaughter.

"Why does there need to be a Jewish state?!?!?!"

I think this development answers your question.

Jews are only ok in the eyes of non-Jews when they aren't being Jewish. So kashrut, how some of our people dress, bris, mikveh, hair covering...All that is out.

1. This law is absolutely nuts

I read that there are 500,000 Muslims and 30,000 Jews in Belgium. That's 530,000 Belgians - 5% of the Belgian population. Add in people who prefer Kosher or Halal foods for the perception of better, more humane, etc. So, 5% of the population wants it. There are companies willing to provide it.

There really is only one reason to ban a product/service that is used by 530,000 people for religious reasons. Religious discrimination. Unless, of course, they choose to bank ice cream, cookies, and, oh, I don't know, apples (totally arbitrary choices). I don't know Belgium, but I can't see this withstanding any court or EU challenges.

2. is there any hunting in Belgium?

I just looked it up, people hunt wild boar with bows and guns. How is that allowed and kosher slaughtering not?

I wasn't sure before, but clearly they are doing this to target certain religions.

4. As a practical matter

Most kosher slaughter is done in Israel, Texas, Arkansas, or Argentina.

So it won't change much.

5. One of the best responses from that LBN article...

"To give the right some credit, they do seem to know how to choose 'popular' ways to create hardships for minorities, motivate their base and split the left."
