(Jewish Group) Controversial cartoonist Steve Bell to leave the Guardian

The controversial Guardian cartoonist Steve Bell is to leave the Guardian after 40 years with the newspaper.

Mr Bell – who has repeatedly faced claims that some of his drawings where antisemitic and racist – has been told that his contract will not be renewed by the media organisation when it expires next year.

Guardian editor Kath Viner announced that the paper was axing 180 jobs earlier this week. But the decision not to renew Mr Bell’s contract is said to be unrelated to the latest round of redundancies.

Mr Bell first joined the Guardian in 1981 and he has frequently sparked controversy with his caricatures.

A cartoon by Mr Bell showing the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, as a puppeteer controlling British political leaders William Hague and Tony Blair, was once criticised by the Community Security Trust’s Dave Rich as comparable to those featuring in Nazi publications.

I'd expect to see this comment on a far-right forum. I'm sickened to see this here. grossproffit Jul 2020 #5

This is evident without reading the captions, or even seeing his depictions of Jews. The style is eerily reminiscent of fin de siecle stereotypes.

May Bell be unable to find employment in his chosen field.

I don’t know this guy but 40-years is a long time. If he was that offensive why wasn’t he gone years ago? Maybe they didn’t renew his contract because he is at or past retirement age? Or The Guardian just wants new people?

But take one sentence in this post and flip it. Would you find this flipped sentence offensive, “comparable to those featuring in Nazi publications”?

“A cartoon by Mr Bell showing the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, as a puppeteer controlling Donald Trump, the Republican Party, the Evangelical right....”

I would find that dead-on accurate. He considered William Hague and Tony Blair Netanyahu’s puppets. I consider Trump, the GOP, and all their supporters the same.

Comparing Jews to puppetmasters is an old anti-Semitic trope. Advocating, excusing, or otherwise approving of anti-Semitic stereotypes is not welcomed in the JEWISH GROUP.

As for why it took 40 years to let his bigoted ass go, well, anti-Semitism always, always seems to have those who make excuses for it and is allowed to be an 'exception' for certain people as a group which is OK to offend.

Took long enough though. It’s tiring being in the only minority group that it’s ok to attack.
