(Jewish Group) How Many American Jews Are There? Depends Which Jewish Expert You Ask

(THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP! RESPECT!!!)

The Jewish population of the United States has reached 6.97 million, according to figures published this week in the “American Jewish Year Book 2019.”

That would make America’s Jewish population larger than Israel’s Jewish population, estimated in the same publication at 6.66 million. But is it really?

That depends whose figures you go by. The official estimate is provided by “AJYB” editors Ira Sheskin and Arnold Dashefsky, who also co-authored the chapter dedicated to the U.S. Jewish population. The professors say their figure is consistent with the estimate of 6.7 million that came out of the first-ever Pew Research Center survey of American Jews, conducted in 2013.

Both surveys include an estimated 1 million Americans who define themselves as “partly Jewish” – meaning that being Jewish is not their only identity.

However, according to Prof. Emeritus Sergio DellaPergola, considered a leading authority on world Jewish demography, there are only 5.7 million American Jews.

I've had many interesting discussions on who is a Jew.

Many offspring of mixed marriages consider themselves part Jewish, even if certain Jewish denominations differ in who they consider to be a Jew. Orthodox, most stringent outlook, is if you're born of a Jewish mother you're Jewish. Patrilineal Jewish blood doesn't count, but reform count it.

If another Hitler took power, he'd go after anyone who was partly Jewish, so in my book if one identifies as Jewish, welcome to the tribe! Level of observance doesn't matter to me, or to most Jews, imo. Nor to those who might want to wipe out those of us with any Jewish blood.

Shabbat Shalom!
