Wiley sparks Twitter virtual 'walkout' over anti-Semitic tweets

London(CNN Business)Actors, activists and performing arts organizations are staging a 48-hour protest over the platform's handling of anti-Semitic posts over the weekend by a popular British rapper.

Wiley, who has been described as the godfather of grime music, posted a string of anti-Semitic comments on his Twitter and Instagram late last week. Although some of the posts were blocked and removed, UK government officials and other public figures blasted both platforms for leaving other posts up for too long and for not doing enough overall to stop anti-Semitism.

Wiley, who was honored with an Order of the British Empire award by Prince William in 2018 for his contributions to music, has now been temporarily locked out of his Twitter (TWTR), Facebook (FB) and Instagram accounts.

The Twitter account of the British rapper Wiley has been permanently suspended following a seven-day ban for a series of Semitic tweets seen as anti-Semitic.

The decision, announced Wednesday, follows a 48-hour boycott by many users, notably British and Jewish, over what they deemed as Twitter’s failure to reprimand the artist over his tweets in a timely manner.

It also comes a day after Facebook and Instagram removed Wiley’s private and verified accounts for similar conduct.

Twitter in a statement said it was sorry it “did not move faster” and was “continuing to assess the situation internally. ”
