2-legged robot runs at high speed

TOKYO —

Ishikawa Watanabe Laboratory of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo, has developed a two-legged robot that can run fast.

For the robot, “Achires,” the researchers did not use ZMP (zero-moment point) control, which is often used for two-legged robot, but employed visual feedback control using a camera to realize the high-speed running.

It can run at a speed of 4.2 km/hour. Its legs move at a speed (pitch) of six steps per second. The length of each leg is 14 cm. To realize the speed of the legs with a human-size robot, an actuator with a strong torque would be required. But if it could be realized, the running speed of the Achires would be about 20 km/h. Its pitch is superior to humans, who run about five steps per second in a 100-meter race.

The Achires runs with a forward-bent posture as if it is falling forward. With ZMP control, the posture of a robot is controlled so that a point called ZMP is always located on the sole of the robot. But such a control is not used for the Achires.
