Antarctica sea ice area crosses record mark again

Antarctic sea ice's area has exceeded 20 million square kilometres for the first time in recorded history, in a shift attributed to climate change.

The mark was passed on 17 September, according to data collected from satellite readings by Phil Reid at the Centre for Australian Climate and Weather Research.

"This is the third year in a row that sea ice extent in the Antarctic has reached a recorded maximum, and the first time on record that it has exceeded 20 million square kilometres," said Jan Leiser, of the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre in Hobart.

The average rate of loss from the Antarctic ice sheets was about 147 billion tonnes per year between 2002 and 2011, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's 2013 report.
