Archeologists have just discovered a nearly complete bird, encased in fossilized tree sap, that has remained intact for almost 100 million years. The bird, which was just a few days old at the time of its death, is one of the most stunningly preserved examples of pre-history avian life ever recovered — but this is no ordinary bird.

The ancient European "Amber Road" trade route included geographical areas located in what are now present-day Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia and Italy.

In the passage about amber in his novel Poland, two men admire a beautiful bauble of amber the size of a pigeon egg. In its center are the remains of a fly with its wings aspread. One man tells the other that the fly lived a hundred years ago and was caught in tree resin which wound up in a river. He further says that the resin gradually turned to the amber jewel they were now beholding. The novel's omniscient narrator then proceeds to explain that the specimen was formed eons ago and that the trapped "fly" represents a long-ago extinct species.
