Representative Jim Bridenstine, Republican of Oklahoma, will be nominated by President Trump to serve as NASAs next administrator, the White House said on Friday night.
Mr. Bridenstine, a strong advocate for drawing private companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin more deeply into NASAs exploration of space, had been rumored to be the leading candidate for the job, but months passed without an announcement. If confirmed by the Senate, Mr. Bridenstine, 42, would be the first elected official to hold that job.
The previous administrator, Charles F. Bolden Jr., stepped down on Jan. 20, the first day of Mr. Trumps presidency. Since then, Robert M. Lightfoot Jr., the associate administrator, has served as acting administrator. Mr. Lightfoots 225 days as of Saturday have already set a record for the longest time NASA has been without a permanent leader.
I am pleased to have Representative Bridenstine nominated to lead our team, Mr. Lightfoot said in a statement. Of course, the nomination must go through the Senate confirmation process, but I look forward to ensuring a smooth transition and sharing the great work the NASA team is doing.

I want an astronaut in that post, or a scientist.
Not some hack political from nearly brain dead OK.
He's also a stupid fucking climate change denial douche bag!
Oppose him!

(45,806 posts)I am pleasantly surprised that FEMA did as good as they did with Harvey since the Con put another one of his idiot superstars with no background in charge of it. I guess the people who work there really know their job and they mostly ignored their fearless leader. Hopefully the same will happen at NASA.

(12,858 posts)Some mildly positive points:
1) He's not OK Senator Inhofe
2) He served as an aviator in the military
3) He's a Rice grad*
Negative comments:
1) He's a GOPer and votes the straight party line
2) He didn't learn anything at Rice (see #1 for proof)
*Jeb's son is also a Rice grad!?!?
Note: I'm a proud (at times - sigh) 1961 Rice grad.
