THIS IS HOW STARS ARE BORN!! Many sea stars begin life as young fairy-like creature that floats through the open ocean. Eventually, a star forms within them (here in yellow) & the little fairy-like body sinks under the weight & a star pops out!

In many starfish, the fairy-like stage is called a brachiolaria, and can last for several weeks. This species has a MUCH larger and longer-lived stage.
