Astronomers confirm orbit of most distant object ever discovered in our solar system nicknamed "Farfarout"
A team of astronomers has confirmed the orbit of a distant planetoid at the farthest reaches of our solar system aptly nicknamed "Farfarout."
The minor planet, officially designated 2018 AG37, is almost four times farther from the sun than Pluto. It is the most distant planetoid ever detected in our solar system, researchers announced this week.
Farfarout was first detected in 2018, beating out the previous record-holder, "Farout." The team, responsible for both discoveries, has an ongoing survey to map the outer solar system.

Farfarout's journey around the sun takes about 1,000 years. The planetoid, which is very faint, is estimated to be about 250 miles across, on the small end of dwarf planets like Pluto.

Who wants to bet that they'll find a solar system body even further out, and name it

(49,445 posts)3. Amazing
We're able to detect an object 250 miles wide 12 billion miles away!
According to Wikipedia it has a very eccentric orbit, with closest approach of about 2.5 billion miles and maximum distance of 13.5 billion miles. Add we detected it near its maximum, when it's slowest and dimmest.
Amazing.

(518 posts)8. What about Niburu?
Every so often rumors circulate on the internet about the reappearance of a wandering planet called Niburu. Also known as Planet Nine or Planet X, Nibiru is supposedly mentioned on ancient Sumerian clay tablets and is said to have crashed through the early Solar System creating the asteroid belt and the Earth before vanishing again.
