(9,356 posts)I'm currently in the Deep South, visiting the relatives for Xmas. So I was already getting a lot of unwanted religion. This horrible tragedy has just amped up all the usual mindless crap about "God has reasons" etc.
Went in a local bookstore here today. Among the piles of future mulch by Sophisticated Theologians like Joel Osteen and Billy Graham, I found one lonely, dusty, neglected copy of Dawkins' "Greatest Show On Earth." Bought it and will probably leave it with some relatives who need it worse than I do.
To my amazement, the store also had 1 copy of Hitchen's "God Is Not Great." It's probably been sitting there since 2006. But I already have that one at home.

(18,219 posts)Yeah, right. I was talking to god the other day. I have a very very devout friend who lost her father a few months ago and just lost her husband at age 52 a few weeks ago. Well, I decided, since she believed so much in god and knew he had his reasons for putting her through this, that I would chew his ass out big time. I have no idea what his reasons could be for causing so much pain, but I told him that was ENOUGH.
Well, he must not listen to atheists, because this week, she lost her mother-in-law. Doubt that he is listening to her either, because I am sure that she has told him that she can't take it anymore.
I would like to get my hands on this god.

(5,851 posts)That post is now gone, and if you delete everything after "/posts" a "Page not found" page is the result.
Edited to add: it's possible he closed his account. Given that not only did he say that but defended it when people critcized it, though, maybe he did get the old heave-ho.

(5,649 posts)The blame it on us or the homosexuals... 'cause, of course, everyone knows that atheists and gays are ruining America and causing "God's wrath to come down on us".
Fuck those people.

Why do you allow such violence in Schools?

Dear Student,
I'm not allowed in Schools.

Between the shooting, the upcoming Sunday, Xmas, etc, I am about as Jesus-ed out as one can get. I finally blew up.
I proceeded to let him (and other posters) have it.
I suggested that if they believed liberals and atheists were powerful enough to keep god away they should consider worshiping liberals and atheists.
I indicated that they needed to increment by one Amendment if they are looking for something to blame.
I informed them that it doesn't make their religion any more powerful or God any more pleased when unwilling participants are forced into their rituals.
Then I posted this:
http://www2.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/religionandschools/prayer_guidance.html
Although the Constitution forbids public school officials from directing or favoring prayer, students do not "shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate," [ 9 ] and the Supreme Court has made clear that "private religious speech, far from being a First Amendment orphan, is as fully protected under the Free Speech Clause as secular private expression." [ 10 ] Moreover, not all religious speech that takes place in the public schools or at school-sponsored events is governmental speech. [ 11 ] For example, "nothing in the Constitution ... prohibits any public school student from voluntarily praying at any time before, during, or after the school day," [ 12 ] and students may pray with fellow students during the school day on the same terms and conditions that they may engage in other conversation or speech. Likewise, local school authorities possess substantial discretion to impose rules of order and pedagogical restrictions on student activities, [ 13 ] but they may not structure or administer such rules to discriminate against student prayer or religious speech.

(8,040 posts)I commented that God must hate Amish people, because he certainly didn't stop that school shooting, even though god was "let in". Also, he must really hate Batman fans.
I also suggested we need to do something about the janitors with their proton packs not letting God through the door/

(9,356 posts)Upthread I predicted atheists would get blamed for the atrocity in CT. Though I admit, predicting this sort of behavior from Xians is on the same level as prophesying that rain will be wet.
