(6,271 posts)There are a few "atheist in foxholes" monuments to our fallen military. The deal with the one pictured is that it's on public property.

(9,356 posts)The local Fundies are pitching a giant hissy fit over this monument. No surprise there, I guess.
It's in the town of Starke, in northern Florida. Eric Hovind showed up to show his ass, metaphorically and non-Biblically speaking. If the name sounds familiar, he's the spawn of Kent "58 Felony Convictions" Hovind.
Here's a link to a HuffPo article about it:
About 200 people attended the unveiling. Most were supportive, though there were protesters, including a group from Florida League of the South that had signs that said "Yankees Go Home."
"We reject outsiders coming to Florida especially from outside what we refer to as the Bible Belt and trying to remake us in their own image," said Michael Tubbs, state chairman of the Florida League of the South. "We do feel like it's a stick in the eye to the Christian people of Florida to have these outsiders come down here with their money and their leadership and promote their outside values here."

Ha! Good idea. Make all the "Yankees go home." And while you're at it, drive out all those degenerate Californians who own Disney World. Pretty soon Florida will have to depend solely on its traditional revenue streams of real-estate fraud and narcotics sales.
EDITED only to correct Kent Hovind's name. It does have a "t," but amazingly doesn't include the letters "shithead."

(9,356 posts)I work for a Calif-based aerospace company that was bought out a few years ago. The buyer was an East Coast megacorp.
E-mails immediately started flying about how the East Coasters would need to straighten out the "laid back surfers" etc. in California.
And they almost always put in that line about "California, land of fruits and nuts, yuk-yuk-yuk."
Yep. Also the land of CalTech, Livermore Labs, Palomar Observatory, Edwards Air Force Base, Vandenberg Missile Test Range, Hughes Aircraft, Ryan "Spirit of St. Louis" Aviation, Douglas Aircraft, North American Aviation, Convair Corp., etc. etc.
(Full Disclosure: I'm a Southerner who migrated to Calif. Doubly doomed...)

(7,886 posts)but details like that get lost in the shuffle of "Can't even get their state organised) as the pour millions into our elections, while we actually balance our budget in spite of it.
Glad to have you here, don't hate the south, just some of the attitudes that tend to come out of it...

(12,132 posts)is they haven't brought me an In N Out burger yet.
I hear they're awesome burgers. But that's too far to drive for one.
I also think they are owned by a fundie christian.
On second thought, 5 Guys is a pretty good burger. And they are right across the street. I'm not mad at Cali for anything after all.
Lordquinton
(7,886 posts)Except there is one right across the street.
And it's not a fundi place, they just have strong christian ideals. Still call them Jesus burger.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)hell, If I only shopped at non-christian stores I wouldn't be able to buy anything. It depends what they do with them. I ain't eating at Chik-Fil-A. Unless I hear different, InO hasn't offended me so that I would refuse to patronize them.

(9,356 posts)The burger wrappers, etc. That's all. Unlike Carl's Jr., started by Orange County arch-conservative Carl Karcher and well known for its massive funding of anti-abortion loons. One reason I haven't eaten at a Carl's Jr. in years, the other reason being their food is crap.
Obviously I'm very clueless, since I ate at In-n-Out for years and never noticed the Babble verses until...I read about them on the Web!
Reasons to like In-N-Out (aside from the freshly-made, delicious food:
1. They've been offered huge amounts of money to franchise nationally or be bought out by a bigger chain, but refuse to do it. They are afraid the quality will suffer. They've been a family-owned business since 1948 and AFAIK, plan to stay that way. That's why you only see them in the West.
2. They used to give out bumper stickers - black background with IN-N-OUT BURGER in huge white letters. Wise-asses slightly modified these stickers, so they could ride around advertising IN-N-OUT URGE.
Wonder what Baby Jesus thought about that?

(12,132 posts)so at least I can participate in not eating there.
When my mom was alive she put babble verses at the end of all her emails too - I still accepted her as my mom.

(12,132 posts)but that's like saying a poke in the eye is better than a kick in the nuts.
I miss my Taco Plaza from Duncanville, TX. Or Taco Tico from here in Orlando.

(34,582 posts)but I like Taco Casa. Unlike the other fast food chains, they actually put cheese in their burritos.
Lordquinton
(7,886 posts)and it's far better than McDonalds, Wendys, Tacobell, Burger King, etc.
Taco Bell has Baja Blast, something I have a strong craving for... I wish I could quit you blue mt. dew...
