it's simply an obvious choice-- have faith or live in fear.

In fear of what? You have to ask them.

as I have observed it is a false dichotomy as it is perfectly possible that faith drives you to fear.

The person who believes they are sinful fears hell and that is a direct result of faith. There is the mother who believes that their child is hell-bound and is driven by that fear to beat or starve the infant. Then there are those whose worlds are demon haunted for they believe Satan has been allowed enough power by God to directly harm humans.

Next there is confusion regarding "Yirah" (and Its derivatives) the word most frequently transcribed as fear. It can mean "Awe" but equally it can mean "Terror" or even "Aprehension" or "Anxiety" you may choose to see the word as meaning "Awe" but many others prefer to regard it as terror.

So say what you mean do not leave people to guess.

similar to anything you'll find on a storefront.

Logic, epistemology, linguistics... none of them have anything to do with this.

TB isn't dismissing the social harm.

He's just dismissing that it is deep or holds any serious meaning. 'You'll have to ask them' means asking the people who asked that question what those of us who don't have faith, have to fear at all. (They are not in a position to answer, as it is a false proposition from the start. It's like asking the pope for marital advice. What the fuck does HE know about it?)

They've even begun to infest the UK. A local Anglican church often posts a sign "Know Jesus, know peace --- No Jesus, no peace"

They want faith because they desperately want to believe that there's a plan, that the big sky daddy has everything in hand, that there's a happy place to go to after they die, because they're afraid of their own mortality and the mortality of friends and family and the fact that crappy, horrible things can happen -- even to good people, to young people, to healthy people -- and change or end their lives (our lives) in an instant.

Religion is based, I think, primarily and mainly upon fear. It is partly the terror of the unknown and partly, as I have said, the wish to feel that you have a kind of elder brother who will stand by you in all your troubles and disputes. Fear is the basis of the whole thing -- fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty, and therefore it is no wonder if cruelty and religion have gone hand in hand. It is because fear is at the basis of those two things. In this world we can now begin a little to understand things, and a little to master them by help of science, which has forced its way step by step against the Christian religion, against the churches, and against the opposition of all the old precepts. Science can help us to get over this craven fear in which mankind has lived for so many generations. Science can teach us, and I think our own hearts can teach us, no longer to look around for imaginary supports, no longer to invent allies in the sky, but rather to look to our own efforts here below to make this world a better place to live in, instead of the sort of place that the churches in all these centuries have made it.

That is what religion offers. From the earliest days, when gods were the reason for volcanoes erupting or wild animals eating your neighbor, it has been fear that motivated people to have faith. Faith that if we throw virgins into the volcano, the Volcano God will be satisfied and not destroy our village. But it was definitely fear that started that whole ball rolling.

So what do you have to fear? Hell, I suppose.
