The church I was raised in thought it was their sacrosanct duty to indoctrinate children from the time they could understand words. The were proud of it and even more proud when children could recite passages and all the books of the bible and profess their love for the lord.

Our church believed in an "age of accountability" wherein children were innocent and would go to heaven if they died before being capable of understanding the message of christ. Most of them figured that, on average, that age was around 6 or 7 depending how smart the kid was so they started working as soon as the kid could open his or her eyes on their own to get them saved.

After I left the church I sometimes rudely wondered if they weren't all safe on into adulthood and old age...
