Scientists just discovered a eukaryotic organism that does not have mitochondria. What do you think happened?
a) The blasphemers have been arrested and those who have refused to recant, even under pain of torture, will be burned at the stake tomorrow at dawn.
b) The scientific community was fractured as the old guard held firmly to the belief that eukaryotes must have mitochondria to be considered eukaryotic, forcing the young upstarts to form their own sect, The First Church of the Virgin Eukaryote. Already the new denomination is fraught with infighting, as those who insist Diet Dr. Pepper does in fact taste more like regular Dr. Pepper are expected to found their own organization: The Reformed First Church of the Virgin Eukaryote.
