I saw it in rabid southern Baptists down south and rabid Catholics in New England. It exists in some of the indigenous religions here in NM, natural events and diseases blamed on people who looked at you funny at some time in the past, they must be witches. Once in a while, that mean streak surfaces and someone ends up tortured, often to death, the torturers smugly self righteous about having destroyed evil in their midst.
It's the fatal flaw of many primate species.
