A Case of Conscience by James Blish being one of the better representatives of the genre (at least from when I was a kid - I don't read much SF anymore).

but since the dominant species in one planet was insectoid and laid huge clutches of eggs, their world had thousands of saviors.

I think the title was "Manticore."

say that they are reincarnated on Earth and in other solar systems since the spirit/soul isn't physical and this has happened for 60,000+ years. More spirits choose to come back to Earth than other systems though. There is no single spirit/soul in charge of all spirits. There are those spirits who have been around the block and do not reincarnate any more (very few reach this level/status). The sage spirits all follow the same rules but no "one" made up the rules. The rules don't need to be explained, they are beyond that. They "know the rules" innately.

Cycle. He didn't come to save us himself... Rather, to teach what we can do to save ourselves.

Hopefully, on planet Xylophone the people can read and question and not fall for an idea not borne out by squat.

It's a great joke to tell to your religious friends. A little long, but worth the read:

Aliens land on earth. They appear to be friendly, and ask if they can speak to our leaders. One of the leaders who comes to speak with them is the Pope. He asks them if they have heard of Jesus Christ. They say they have, in fact he visited their planet in ancient times. They say he was so nice to them, and showed them how to live in peace and harmony and they are eternally grateful for that.

They tell the Pope that Jesus frequently comes back to visit them to see how they are doing and instructs them on how to solve any problems they may have. The Pope is surprised to hear this and tells them we have been waiting for over 2,000 years for him to return here. The Aliens say maybe he comes to see them because they have better chocolate than we have on Earth.

The Pope asks what does chocolate have to do with it? They say, well the first time he came to visit he did so many nice things and taught them so much, when he left, they gave him a big Thank You card signed by all their leaders and a box of their finest chocolates. Then they ask "What did you guys do?"

The earth is the center of the universe, the sun goes around it, and we're all there is. and the whole business is only 6000 years old.

Didn't your parents teach you anything?
