I have seen serious attempts to argue that various gaudy massacres in the Old Testament were righteous and moral, because the deity ordered the deed, and the deity being the source of moral law can only order lawful, moral things. Even if the order to, say, slay all males regardless of age or condition, would be rejected as illegal and refused execution by any competent sergeant today, if uttered by his company commander.
