He believes religion is necessary and good for other people less intelligent than he is. From the link:

"Religion was necessary to control people. He wasn't religious himself, he simply considered it necessary."

Necessary for others so he can control them.

Don't do as I do, do as I say.

But there are a lot of awful religious people, no surprise there are some awful atheist too.
