This is without a doubt one of the stronger displays of christian privilage I've ever seen on DU. (Original Post) eqfan592 May 2012 OP

Do you folks try to make christians aware of it when they make their sense of christian privilege obvious? And if so, how do you generally go about doing it?

Yep, non-believers point it out all the time. The way they do so generally depends on the poster and their personal style.

However the pointing-out is done, we usually get the following responses:

1. Ignored.

2. Special pleading.

3. "Come help us smash the Fundamentalist stranglehold on American Xianity...by joining yet another circle-jerk in the Ivory Tower!"

4. You know, Xianity was solely responsible for ending slavery and starting the civil rights movement. So STFU, atheist scum.

5. There is absolutely no comparison between the constitutional rights of strident, Fundy-Atheist non-believers and the rights of...well, anybody else in American society. So STFU, atheist scum.

6. Stalin.

Don't try to pin them down on what those "other ways" are.

From past discussion threads I've seen the following as possibilities for what at least one of the "other ways" advocates considers to be "other ways of knowing:"

-Hearsay
-Imagination (making shit up)

Between 2nd/3rd/4th...nth-hand accounts and wholesale invention, that really covers everything, including why Stalin proves that 1st world liberal atheists are evil, why American Atheists is a hate group, and why atheist meet-ups are the same as Klan rallies.

All that from the same poster too.

On edit, you're even dealing with him on a thread.

Have they used Hitchens as an example of "organzed atheism" being identical to the state atheism of the USSR yet?

and others like them.

You aren't going to change this person's mind. So why engage? Because there are people reading the thread that generally just lurk and THEY will get it. You will expose that person for what they are and others will see it and it will affect that person's credibility down the line on other things.

Lately I'm noticing that the questions religious posters won't give a straightforward answer to say as much--or even more--about the posters as the ones they will answer, e.g., do you stand by your church's position on gay marriage? It's amazing the lengths to which some people will go, and the verbal contortions they'll employ, to avoid answering a simple yes-no question with a simple "yes" or "no."

Another favorite is, "Well, I'm working from within to effect change in my church." How?!? By continuing to attend services and continuing to give them money? Yeah, that'll show 'em.
