Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East is experiencing 16 foot snow drifts

Meteorologists say the amount of snow recorded since early January is unprecedented for the region and has not been seen in over 50 years.

A major winter storm hit Far East Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula overnight on Tuesday, burying entire neighborhoods, triggering urban avalanches and forcing officials to deploy their vehicle fleet as a makeshift taxi service in the regional capital.

That would be a normal seasonal snowstorm in the northern Rockies.

I have lots of pictures of buried houses and vehicles, 30ft tall snowbanks.

Now it's a surprise when there's a weather event like this.
