NWS Issues Enhanced Winter Storm Threat for Maryland and Northern Virginia

The National Weather Service has issued an enhanced threat for a potential winter storm this weekend, citing an increased risk for significant travel impacts and possible closures.
According to the NWS, the storm could impact the region on Saturday, January 24, 2026. Forecasters note that confidence remains low given the five day lead time, but conditions are coming together in a way that could support a high impact winter weather event.
In the latest forecaster discussion, the NWS said 18Z guidance continues to show the possibility of a significant winter storm across the area. Recent trends suggest precipitation may arrive slightly later and track a bit farther north than earlier projections, with the heaviest precipitation expected from Saturday night through Sunday afternoon.
Probabilistic guidance highlights the uncertainty but also the potential severity. The National Blend of Models shows a 40 to 60 percent chance of at least six inches of snow over a 48 hour period, along with a 20 to 30 percent chance of one foot of snow in parts of the region.
