Temps reach 100 degrees as heat records fall in Deep South
May 26, 2019
AVANNAH, Ga. (AP) The unofficial start of summer feels more like its blistering peak in parts of the Deep South, where temperatures at or near 100 degrees are setting heat records during the Memorial Day weekend.
Heat and humidity were forecast to combine for a dangerous heat index of 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40.56 Celsius) on Sunday across roughly 20 counties in southeastern Georgia and South Carolina, said Emily McGraw, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Charleston, South Carolina.
The weather service issued a similar heat advisory for a portion of the Florida Panhandle. McGraw said the forecast showed little relief in sight, and there was potential for some cities to see their hottest days ever in the month of May.
Savannah reached 100 degrees (37.78 Celsius) Saturday, tying a record and marking the coastal Georgia citys earliest triple-degree day since 1953. Columbia, South Carolina, on Saturday also hit 100, just one degree shy of a record from 2000.

(60,010 posts)temps have been 10 degrees above normal all month, and we are looking at the heat keeping up for at least a week ahead.
I take that back, just looked at the long range forecast for June....it isn't gonna let up.
which means potential power outages because of A/C demands.
And crop failures. Most cotton, soybean farmers do not irrigate.

These hot temperatures haven't even waited for summer.

(14,961 posts)It's not really making a difference. When I was younger, summer was my favorite. Now winter is my favorite. Living in the same town my whole life, 42 years I can say without exaggeration it is much hotter here than it was even 10 years ago.

(11,581 posts)...for this time of year. We live on the East side of Hawaii, too--known for lots of rain. The last winter was colder than usual as well, so climate change seems to be showing up all over.
Right now our lawn is brown and our rainwater catchment tank is low. We are thinking of putting in a fireplace to help us through the next winter.
Hopefully, your heatwave won't be too bad this year

(22,655 posts)Today it's 96°, so far. I've lost my appetite and it's making me sick. Too hot to even do chores, especially outside. We are also currently in a boil water advisory because water levels have reached a critical shortage. No rain for days and none in sight until a 40% chance June 4th. I fear that the worst is yet to come. Definitely dreading Dog Days*!
* 40 days
According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, the Dog Days of summer are traditionally the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11, which coincide with the dawn rising of the Sirius, the Dog Star. This is soon after the Summer Solstice, which of course also indicates that heat will soon set in.
