(9,161 posts)an F5. If I have to be near a tornado I want to be underground.
This is what my hometown looked like afterwards. The Gibson Store at the beginning is where I planned to go that afternoon before the skies opened. The bridge at the end of the film was a block from my house.
The Manual Arts Building that appears at about 4:30 was on the grounds of my elementary school. As the camera pans to the left you see a one story brick building; my elementary school. It was never used again.
The Jerry Fifer who appears with the Sweets was a friend of my older brother. Within a year or so they became roommates for a time. Jerry found himself in a car with Sherry Sweet, six stories above the Oliver plant that appears near the end of the film. Neither were hurt.

Bill Kurtis was our TV guy with the famous "For God's sake please take cover!" http://tornado.cjonline.com/

(34,103 posts)your video is scary. I remember the same kind of thing. I was 12 when it happened and I later went to the University there and it still had many trailers for classrooms. Some nice buildings had been built but not enough all those years later.

(9,161 posts)Three tornados joined up at the river, formed one big one, and marched up Main Street. Instant urban renewal. At that we were lucky. It happened at 4:53 on a Wednesday afternoon. Kids were mostly home from school, and most adults hadnt left work or were home. Still, 13 died in a town of 10,000.

(13,883 posts)when a big ass hurricane is coming. Rule of thumb is you Run from the water (surge) and hide from the wind..
Tornadoes on the other hand, it's like poof! they are there.. Got caught in one in Kansas years ago on a motorcycle trip. We hold up at a rest stop and hid in the janitors closet. No damage even though the bikes blew over. They were right next to the building.
Earth quakes too. They are on you in a heart beat... No thank you..

(37,457 posts)At one point it looked like a tornado was only yards away, on a road. Maybe I didn't see it clearly.
