Major winter storm: Heavy snow, paralyzing ice forecast for Midwest, mid-South.

Winter weather alerts, affecting nearly 80 million people, stretch from Texas to Vermont through Thursday.

Nearly 80 million Americans are under winter storm watches or warnings ahead of a major storm that will bring heavy snow and crippling amounts of ice to a considerable swath of the Lower 48 states through Thursday.

Winter storm watches and warnings stretch from the Mexican border to Canada, including major cities such as Chicago, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Memphis, Oklahoma City and Dallas. In these areas, the worst conditions are anticipated Wednesday and Thursday. There’s a chance the alerts could be expanded into the Northeast and interior Mid-Atlantic as the system shifts east by Friday.

“Plan now for prolonged hazardous winter weather conditions and disrupted travel,” wrote the National Weather Service.

A foot or more of snow is likely in parts of the Midwest, Ohio Valley and southern Great Lakes, while blizzard conditions are expected in the storm’s wake across the Northern Plains. Parts of northern Indiana could see record snowfall.

Areas that receive icing will probably see scattered to widespread power outages and tree damage, with travel becoming perilous. The zone from Arkansas to southern Ohio is particularly at risk.

“Travel could be nearly impossible and should be avoided unless absolutely necessary,” wrote the National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky.'>>>
