Lawmaker to resign after sexual contact with interns
A South Dakota lawmaker who admitted to having sex with two legislative interns during his time in office resigned Monday.
Rep. Mathew Wollmann, R-Madison, told House leadership that he planned to step down, House Majority Leader Lee Qualm, R-Platte, confirmed.
Qualm, along with House Speaker Mark Mickelson, R-Sioux Falls and House Minority Leader Spence Hawley, D-Brookings, in a statement said Wollmann tendered his resignation Monday morning.
"The South Dakota State Legislature, like any other organization, is comprised of human beings," the three wrote in a statement. "Consequently, we will experience human failure and imperfection. Every legislator has an obligation to refrain from behavior unbecoming to the Legislature and inconsistent with maintaining the publics trust."
