Ad questioning Noem on federal tax reflects big gap in state finance laws
PIERRE – The decision by a state legislator to defend South Dakota’s congresswoman against advertising by a national group gets to the heart of the fight underway about money spent by out of state organizations to influence South Dakota voters.
The ad alleges the border-adjustment tax under consideration in Congress would raise prices by $1,700 for groceries, gas, clothes and medicine. The ad says U.S. Rep. Kristi Noem, a Republican, hasn’t taken a position on it.
State Rep. Mark Mickelson, R-Sioux Falls, went to her defense Saturday in a Facebook post. His message sounded similar to what Mickelson’s been arguing this winter against groups that spend money from donors who can be difficult to identify.
“Why would anyone think the Club for Growth is helping South Dakota by attacking our elected representatives? Their kids don't go to our schools, we don't see them in at church on Sunday or the Friday night basketball game,” Mickelson wrote on Facebook.
