Daugaard calls for peace as Keystone XL pipeline gets green light

Gov. Dennis Daugaard on Friday celebrated President Donald Trump's approval of the Keystone XL pipeline proposal and called for peaceful protests in South Dakota in the wake of its construction.

In a statement, the Republican governor called the decision a victory and acknowledged those who likely won't view the news in the same light.

“I recognize that some South Dakotans will not celebrate this news, and I respect that perspective," Daugaard said. "I hope we will all seek to exercise our First Amendment rights peacefully, and respect the right of others to do likewise.”

Environmental advocates and Native American tribal members have said they plan to take up the fight again against the 1,700-mile oil pipeline that would extend from Alberta, Canada to the Gulf Coast in Texas, crossing through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas along the way. Trump's green light on the construction permit restarts TransCanada's efforts to complete the project and reverses an Obama administration decision to stop the pipeline.
