Crop experts: Big harvests, low prices mean more SD grain will be stored; safety concerns

Farmers and other crop watchers say more of this year’s big corn and soybean crops will probably be stored in bins instead of quickly sent to markets overseas.

Tough talk on trade and tariffs by President Donald Trump as well as some foreign leaders has hurt prices to farmers in recent months and maybe closed off some key markets, farm leaders have told the Capital Journal.

Think China shops and bulls.

Where China shops affects markets near and far, because it’s, one of the biggest customers for U.S. farm products.

South Dakota farmers have gone, in a relatively few years, from being known mostly for wheat, to planting two-thirds of their acres to corn and soybeans.

1. it's my understanding that beef and pork is overstocked now because of tariffs

....and I think I am seeing that reflected in pork prices. Thick center cut chops at $3.29 a pound the other day. No hormones or antibiotics.

2. This story bears watching.

Only market available is this,Corn going to Ethenol and beans going to Crushers. Well guess what The Bean crushers are not buying,waiting for price collapse. Have we seen this before,yes. Ethenol Plants loaded up with old crop el cheapo corn . Guess what,price collapse is happening as we write. And yes we have seen this before. All the 15% Ethenol blending Gas won't help this nightmare for those Trump Farmers.

is quite literal for those that voted for Trump and his policies.

It is going to get interesting monitoring for grain elevator accidents over the next several months. With more grain being stored and less regulatory oversight it adds up to a disaster in the making.

4. Hate to say this,especially in South Dakota.

Worst Worker Comp rules and reg's in the upper Midwest. Max payout for a injury is some where in and around 15k. On the job inspections rarely happen and only after the target has plenty of notice.

Some of the Grain Bins in use are forty to fifty years old and some older than that. Yes,there was a huge Bin Building by some farmers three years ago,and that was because of fifteen dollar Beans and Ten dollar Corn. Oh btw,loans were available at 0% to 2% at that time. The two major Bin Companies were carrying the paper just to keep their Sub Contractors busy. And the bulk of the build out was replacement of Tornado damaged Bins and Bin sites.
