South Dakota governors issue more than a proclamation per day

When Gov. Kristi Noem issue two proclamations for a Day of Prayer for two reasons and only two days apart this week, it seemed like a lot of proclamations, especially about prayer.

Earlier, Noem had proclaimed April 7 a Day of Prayer concerning the flooding and its victims across the state as well as Nebraska and Wyoming.

She declared May 2 a Day of Prayer in line with the national and historic Day of Prayer with roots in President Washington’s era. And in a more contemporary vein, she declared May 4 a Day of Prayer and Fasting over a new New York law said to codify the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion at most stages of fetal life.

But three such days of prayer in four months maybe isn’t excessive in light of the total number of “Executive Proclamations” Noem and her predecessor make.
