Former SD Sen. Tom Daschle writes that we are forced to adjust to living in a world of COVID-19

Over these troubling weeks of the coronavirus crisis, ensconced in our home in South Carolina, I have attempted to give our clients my daily perspective on developments in Washington, the country and around the globe as each of us experiences an unprecedented series of challenges for ourselves, our families, our businesses, governmental leaders and the international community.

Given recent projections of an increase in COVID-19 cases, exceeding 30,000 a day this month, it would appear that any hope of an early return to normal economic and social practice has diminished significantly. Most experts agree that the relaxation of shelter in place and social distancing restrictions will likely exacerbate an already risky living environment.

Until treatments and a vaccine can be found, it is likely that the nation — and all of the world's population — will have to learn to live with COVID-19. That will require an enormous effort from all of us to strike a pragmatic balance between our deep concern for protecting our health and our equally grave concern for our personal, as well as the country's, financial and economic viability.

If you are like me, COVID-19 has had a dramatic impact on the way we work, the way we now conduct our daily lives, and the way we think about the future. Increasingly, I have come to believe that our lives will never completely return to life before it.
