Related: About this forumThe Heung bu and Nol bu fable; 흥부와 놀부
Dr. Petersen discusses (in English) two well known Korean fables and their social significance. The Hungbu and Nolbu fable reflects protest to the change to primogeniture in Chosun according to Dr. Petersen. He also believes other famous folk tales representing social ethical principles in Chosun, such as the tale of Chunhyangjeon, are a form of social protest.

(21,646 posts)1. Rec very interesting . Made me think of nursery rhymes and lullabyes that really were comments on
events of the time like Baa baa black sheep or Humpty Dumpty
Interesting how the inheritance rules changed too !
I'm so glad Dr. Petersen is doing this work on youtube. I had read this fable some time ago, and felt that I hadn't understood it somehow. I also watched one of his movie recommendations that was available on youtube, Chunhyangjeon, (1961) and really enjoyed it.
