River Where the Moon Rises, is a new Kdrama from the Goguryeo period. I watched the first 3 episodes on viki.com and it was refreshing to see a decent historical drama after a dry spell of terrible dramas afflicted with magical time travel, eternal beings, monsters and the like. More contemporary fare in the current dry spell is characterized by gratuitous violence, boring romances and scheming business executives, yawn.

There is a quite of bit of violence in River Where the Moon Rises, but it seems to be in historical context, and bearing in mind that the story is based on a legend, where the main female lead can jump over walls and roofs, and beat multiple men at a time in combat, somehow it isn't as offensive. An SCMP review was overly critical, imo, of this drama, which i think is well paced, and well acted. Yes, there are scenes where the dialogue seems too contemporary. Viki users seem to like it. It's just action, romance, intrigue, etc. Entertaining.
