2016 Postmortem

I myself, am a political greenhorn. Having only gotten into politics within this past year because of Bernie. No other candidate has ever inspired me enough to go, "Woah, real change could be had and the outspoken underdog who represents the common man is actually running! I've gotta be apart of this!"
So, within my experience of politics of less than a year, I saw the swings, the twists, the turns. The ups and downs, the all arounds. I saw how nasty people got and how truly understanding others could be.
I witnessed a majority continue forth, undaunted by the status quo, and I witnessed a minority consistently attack that majority, with calculative and predictable malice. I saw people silenced and banned for voicing their opinion, and I watched people go grave dancing on their dismissal.
I saw smears against people, I saw lies being spread, I saw insider communities spring up for the sheer purpose of conniving and plotting against other people.
All in the name of politics.
I knew that politics could get dirty. It's one of things that shouldn't turn up in dinnertime conversation. I knew what I was getting into, but I didn't know how grotesque it truly could be.
So in light of recent events, after all that I've seen, I can't help but remember those users who gloated that our Bernie had no chance. I can't forget all the negativity, denial and blatant dismissal of facts that I saw. I can't forget the despicable grave dancing that occurred when I saw friends get stricken down.
I also can't forget telling those folks how blindsided they were about to be.
So now, with only a couple of weeks away from the Iowa and New Hampshire caucuses, our guy Bernie has the lead that we were told he'd never get.
So, because of all the crap I've seen here, I felt that it was perfectly appropriate for me to post this in light of our recent events....

I'm certain I'll continue seeing deplorable things here. I know this race isn't over yet. But I have a good feeling, I'll be able to post this gif, again and again and again...

(11,366 posts)Heck, I wish more local committees had progressive-thinking people on them. A number of people have complained this cycle that when they tried to support Bernie at their local Dem committees, the establishment types on these boards have turned their noses up and tried to prevent it.
Democrats can have their preferences, but no one should shun enthusiastic supporters simply because they think the nominee should be the establishment's choice.

It is alright to be happy. My client today told me my Bernie was doing better...they only watch CNN. She said she was going to write in Joe Biden. I told her she needed to caucus for him. (Biden) She seems to remember a convention that the write ins got on the ballot. Who am I to stand in her way of expressing her vote? I am going to send her the link to caucusing her in WA.

Bernie supporters don't need to mention much that they support him, let alone mention it "a few hundred times." It's pretty darn obvious who each of us supports... Bernie supporters show it through acts, deeds and a ton of "Go Bernie(s)!", "Feel the Bern(s)", and just generally talking him up wildly. I could be wrong, but I don't recall any post of yours that reads like that.

Before any vote is cast, he has not only shifted the conversation, he has single-handedly dragged the presumptive nominee toward his policies at virtually every single turn. She is taking positions she never has nor never would have taken if it weren't for him.
That should make him dance. It SHOULD make any Democrat dance who is capable of putting aside the cult of personality.

(55,981 posts)the Chelsea lies, things are going to get rougher. The Wealthy Oligarchy isn't used to losing and they have unlimited resources to SwiftBoat those they oppose.
But the reason that there are so many new enthusiastic Democrats supporting Sanders, is that they are out to fight the corrupt Establishment of our Party. They will only get more determined the dirtier it gets.
Cassiopeia
(2,603 posts)However, take a bit of this deserved optimism and bottle it up if you can. The last 4 months or so have only been the beginning. The real war still hasn't even gotten here yet.
I'm with you though. We've been under constant attack from Hillary's camp trying to discourage us, to turn us away, to try and force us to just give up. We haven't though, because we're not fighting for a politician, we're fighting for a different way of doing things. We're fighting to make a positive difference in everyone's lives.
I promise it will get much worse. Even if Bernie wins every state in mini landslides (which is not likely to happen) people will become more vocal and fling more and more shit. It's the nature of politics.
I love your enthusiasm, hope, and confidence. Traits such as yours will carry us to victory.

(15,435 posts)You were talking about millennials, I believe. I told you how much I appreciated your input, that YOU were the future and glad that you were willing to jump in and reach out to those of us who've been in the trenches for years and years.
You've shown that you really are the future and I'm so glad you're still here fighting. I had thought those of us, Boomers as I call myself might be able to weather the storm that's sure to come. I see know that I was wrong and my Party, the one I joined so many years ago before the right leaning Democrats took over could help us find our way back from what we once were. With Bernie Sanders this may be possible, but we still have so many BIG GUNS that will be rolled out as Hillary falters.
THOSE Democrats who also knew a different Democratic Party and fought for "we the people" way back during Viet Nam, Civil Rights, Medicare and many of the core beliefs they once so fiercely fought for. Even THEY decided to fall in line with the status quo of today. The ones who I once called the backbone of our Party and stood up to TPTB. I KNOW when it began to happen. I watched the slow slide rightward as the DLC gained ground and grew larger. Then we were told the DLC was no more only to be replaced by the Blue Dogs and the beginning of the Third Way. But the DLC never really went away, they just merged and here we are at the cross road.
If THE PEOPLE keep fighting back with the help of those like you who really NEED to begin to see how far we've strayed from the core values of THE Party I joined so long ago, then we can rebuild. Instead of standing on what now is shaky ground we NEED the help of those like you to build again in your own way, the way of the future with a man who still remembers the same things I do.
I will again say, you have my respect and you and YOUR generation can help this country turn away from more of what we are living through now. They once stood by us and worked with us, but somehow GREED found it's way to leave us behind.
I still believe there are those who want to break away and stop this GREED, but "we the people" have to send the message.
Your words tell the story, now it's time to make history again! Don't back down!
retrowire
(10,345 posts)Greed always finds a way to corrupt. And there is an ebb and flow to everything. I think we've been in the deeper rut for a while now, and it's now time to rise.
As I continuously say, Hillary, and other establishmentarian politicians will only pick the low hanging fruit. "Look! 12.50 an hour, that will appease you." "Hey, I went after the spooky shadow banks on wall St, but I left my buddies alone. See? I'm helping!"
Picking the low hanging fruit is what we've been doing. And it's not enough. Electing Bernie is the only way to shake the whole damn tree. We'll get all the fruit, even the difficult ones. And we will prevail because we worked hard enough and believed we could.
I don't think any of us should listen when the Third Way tells us, "Oh, that fruit is too high. We can't pick that." No. We are the people, this is our government and nation, and YES WE CAN do whatever we choose. It IS possible. Bernie has proven time and time again that his goals have been achieved by others, and it is not a pipe dream.
Thank you again for your words. I will keep fighting. But I, like many others, don't know how I'll feel if Bernie doesn't make it. I was disenchanted with the political machine before... I can't imagine how I'd feel if that happened.
But I won't be allowing a Republican in the white house.
ChiciB1
(15,435 posts)I want to see a brighter day, and Bernie is the first person I've seen in many, many, many years who I believe in. I also know he will really NEED the people of this country to stick with him, should he win and DON'T think the battle was won. This is his beginning, too many in D.C. won't be happy to see him sworn in. Not just the other side, but OUR side. We send the message, the we start again at the local level to help him make history.
Yeah, should she be the nominee I know what needs to be done... but as I've said before it will be a vote that won't make me feel better.
I have more belief now than I ever thought possible. ONWARD!!!
