http://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/1/13/1469263/-Losing-Bernie-My-Journey-from-FeelTheBern-to-HillYes"See that kid in the red shirt and baseball cap in the bottom right? Thats me. My name is Anthony. Im 21 years old. Im a college student. Im a committed progressive. I donated to Bernie Sanders. In many ways, Im the average Bernie Sanders supporter...except that Im caucusing for Hillary Clinton.
This isnt a great picture of me. I look...angry, almost. I think this image captured the peak moment I felt the Bern. Its been downhill since then.
Ive known about Bernie Sanders longer than most. In my nascent political life, I went on a pursuit of finding progressive politicians to read about, he was one of the first to come up. His voting record, what he said, where he came from...he was like an older version of me. It was only natural I supported him when he announced his presidential campaign, I immediately donated. I bought a bumper sticker. And I went to his speech in my hometown of Portland, Maine. I changed my Facebook profile pic to a Bernie logo. This was summer."

(6,409 posts)The article reads like a list of Clinton talking points. This does not ring true as an account of someone who was attracted to Sanders as a progressive, then migrated to Clinton as a realist. It reads more like the account of someone who was initially aligned with Clinton, and became temporarily intrigued by Sanders.

(24,544 posts)Worse still, I saw white people telling people of color how to vote. How can Hillary be leading so much among African Americans? Dont they know Bernies policies are better for them? I dont know, isnt it up to them to decide whose policies benefit them the most? Maybe they might have some trouble trusting an old white man from New England?
...All the while, the vitriol from Sanders supporters has only grown. Insinuating that Gabby Giffords brain injuries are what made her endorse Hillary, throwing John Lewis and Planned Parenthood under the bus, insinuating that the only reason why anyone endorses Hillary is fear of retribution, insulting Sybrina Fulton, the grieving mother of Trayvon Martin, for having the gall to endorse the candidate with the better gun control record. It seems to have permeated parts of the campaign, too: little digs from the candidate and the campaign (the most recent one is referring to Hillary as The Anointed One, which is a level of condescension and haughtiness I expect from Trump) from a candidate who still purports to never attack.
LIAR Clearly none of this ever happened. He's obviously a paid Clinton operative.

(24,544 posts)There is NOTHING that ANYONE can type on this board that doesn't illicit a year's worth of shrieks from you guys. Definitely the actions of a group of people happy and confident in their choice of candidate.
And not only was your post completely unnecessary, the fact that it does nothing but corroborate the point of this OP and the other 400 articles written about Sanders supporters just makes it even more ironic and delicious.

I posted a comment to the OP which you decided was me making some claim which I told you I didn't do. And yet, here we are 5, 6 posts later with you still posting to me even though it beyond clear you have absolutely NOTHING to say, no point to make and just want to argue for no reason whatsoever. And the fact that you have recently targeted all of this attention on me is flattering surely, but completely unwanted.
If you call this "discussion" then it explains absolutely everything about your participation on this board.

And of course, this entire beyond pointless conversation all stems from you seeing my moniker and feeling the need to engage even when it's clear that whatever "point" you had to make doesn't exist and never did. And, as I do every time I see your name in a thread, I'll either laugh out loud or skip over your posts entirely. And it is so INCREDIBLY telling that you are incapable of doing the same and seem to actually be proud of that fact. Certainly explains the endless need to swagger and chest thump around here. (24,544 posts)Sid is someone I like and even he does nothing more than post his  smiley half the time and that sends certain folks here in a flat out rage which is precisely whey he does it.
I have never ONCE in my entire time on this web site seen somebody tell Sid to leave them alone, to stop chasing after them and he flat out refuse to do so. Sid may annoy the shit out of people here because he laughs in their faces -- and usually for damn good reason -- but he is not PSYCHOTIC which is the only word I can think of to describe people who are asked to leave someone alone and refuse.
This is the difference between the decent folks here and others. I see stuff every single day that I disagree with. But I am not so goddamned ENTITLED to chase after posters here and believe that I have the right to force my thoughts and opinions on people simply because they disagree with me. And I sure as shit would stop if someone asked me to. So you ain't nothing like Sid. Sid is a decent guy. I have never seen Sid stoop to this type of needless and idiotic behavior and I know he'd know better than to think he was doing the right thing or "fighting the good fight" if he did.
DisgustipatedinCA
(12,530 posts)You should check and see if you don't have that same deal. By the way, you haven't asked me to leave you alone or to "stop chasing you". You were too concerned with couching your terms as if you were a psycholohist of some sort, so you talked in clinical terms about the maladies you perceive I have. I see, by the way, that I've progressed to psychosis in your latest post. We've got ourselves the honest to goodness second incarnation of Bill First, right here at DU.
Now, let's see. You've told me I'm unbalanced, you've told me I'm psychotic. You've condescended to call me "dear". Have I done the same? Have I called you names? Have I told you you're abnormal? I have not. Yet still, you've attempted to become the victim a few times in our exchange, first, when you spoke of me "making you" do and say things beyond your control. And in more recent posts, you're setting yourself up as the victim of some sort of stalking. Last I heard, stalking doesn't happen out in the open in a single thread, in one giant indent.
But you ducked the bunting issue, and we really need to decide whether we're doing standard red, white, and blue, or if we're going to do something different and bold.

DisgustipatedinCA
(12,530 posts)Upon more careful parsing of the thread, you'll see that I brought Sid into the conversation. I'll be looking forward to seeing him here again soon.
Number23
(24,544 posts)Which is not something alot of folks here can say.
As anyone reading this thread can see, this bewilderingly dumb subthread has nothing to do with my first post within it. A few days ago that poster was part of a pile on where six, yes SIX, posters -- all of them Sanders supporters -- jumped down my ass because I asked someone who demanded a poster with an 'African Americans for Hillary' and a pro-Third Way sic in their sig line leave DU because of their Third Way support if that was his call to make.
That was it. Someone demanded that someone leave DU because of a Third Way pic in their sig line, I said VERBATIM "think that's your call to make?" and had SIX PEOPLE jumping down my ass as a result. JAG, I felt so special! By the time it was all said and done, I'd embarrassed them almost half as much as they'd embarrassed themselves. This exchange was so obviously a chance for this person to finally get his REVENGEEEEE!! and the last word that means so much. And if he has to argue and puff out that chest over absolutely, positively nothing in the process, it's pretty clear that's 100% okay.
To paraphrase Lloyd Benson: I know Sid. Sid is a friend of mine. You sir, are no Sid.
JustAnotherGen
(31,823 posts)I missed that. So they only want us here if we support Sanders?
That's not very Democratic. Eh? FDR gave us a craptastic housing policy and I know a lot of folks want to go back to FDR. Maybe they think we are bringing down their property (DU being said home) values?
Number23
(24,544 posts)beyond "must harass/destroy anyone who doesn't agree with me." Look at them in GDP. The same 20 or so folks are in every thread starting 40 shouting matches over Fuck All, chasing posters up and down this board and then demanding that the folks being chased are the ones that should put the harasses on ignore. Moronic.
Bigtree has been getting it particularly bad lately. All of the "concern" about his "health" from people chasing him around and treating him like shit is so endearing. If only half as much energy went into doing something positive for their candidate as it does haunting the steps of folks that want nothing to do with them there'd probably be a hell of alot less acrimony around here.

Even when the ladies ask them to leave them alone, that since of ENTITLEMENT keeps them from being able to do so. In their head, it's a public space so they should be free to do whatever the hell they want, seemingly oblivious that others also have rights and that includes asking people who's opinion you don't care about or who's attention is unwanted to buzz off and that a decent person would do just that. You'd just do it. Why would anyone chase after someone who doesn't like you and has asked you to stop?
This is exactly the type of behavior that has gotten certain folks an absolutely phenomenal online reputation. And judging by the endless articles, there is alot of this behavior out there on the Internet and if the folks doing this garbage think it's a silencing tactic, they could not have gotten that more wrong.

(80,708 posts)It's a public discussion board, by posting on a public discussion board (in the main forums, no less) that means that other members of the public respond to you.
It doesn't mean your posts come with a special list of who is "allowed" to respond to you, or not. And you bet your bippy Mr. Sid Dithers (among others) doesn't keep a crumpled up list in his pocket of who on DU has politely requested he not talk to, or not, either.
It's funny you want to talk about "silencing tactics", because "you're not allowed to respond to my posts, person I don't like!" is a silencing tactic.
And it's ironic, because the software comes with a GREAT way to not have to hear from people you don't want to- the ignore button.

(11,833 posts)Or, that you decided to call the above poster a liar. I've seen a ton of it. Telling black people how to vote. Telling white people how to vote. Hostility and paranoia toward anyone who speaks their truth, or disagrees in a respectful manner or even asks questions to try and learn more by asking questions. I like a lot of things about Sanders. But I too am disturbed by much of what the author of the Daily Kos poster describes. I've witnessed it. Much more from self-proclaimed Sanders supporters than from undecideds or self-proclaimed Hillary or Martin supporters. Calling the above poster a liar for expressing an opinion based on experience.
The replies often seem to come in two forms. Claim the person who says how they feel about it is a shill or paid operative. Or mock and ridicule them for having sensitivities to this type of patronizing bullying. I don't like it one bit. I will continue speaking out about to the extent that I can even stand reading any of these pile-on threads. The smugness and self-righteousness is actually causing me to have real hesitation of voting for Sanders. Some have said 'Well, then you must never have been a real Sanders supporter in the first place.' That's bullshit. It's also a creepy form of cult-like behavior. Denying it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I also find the denial alone to be patronizing. It's like saying 'I don't believe your feelings because you aren't telling me what I want to hear.' That type of response is incredibly demeaning and insulting.
I won't round up links to all the boorish behavior. It's been evident to me for approximately six months. It never seems to subside. I find it really hateful and pitiful. And yes, I think it does reflect on Sanders. Unless most of these rude people who can't seem to treat other people as human beings with legitimate feelings is some paid troll trying to make the Sanders campaign look bad.
I'd like to vote for Sanders. I've been a democratic socialist since before joining this board, before it became fashionable here. All this hostility toward other posters bothers me. Denying that it exists doesn't mean it doesn't exist. This thread alone provides many examples of it. It's a reason I don't post much in this group. I don't appreciate getting crap for calling out racist behavior.
DisgustipatedinCA
(12,530 posts)You're mischaracterizing my post. I did not talk race with the other poster. I DID NOT call the other poster a liar. The other poster has jsut posted that I did not call her a liar.

Context: from HuffPost, Jan. 6, 2015:
USTR told HuffPost it had ramped up congressional outreach, and has held nearly 1,600 meetings on Capitol Hill over the trade pact. Senator Sanders, like all Members of Congress, has full access to the draft TPP negotiating text and we look forward to working with him to review it," USTR spokesman Trevor Kincaid said. "Members of Congress, labor unions, non-profits, and environmentalists have all played an important role in shaping our approach to our trade policy. This includes Senator Sanders, whose input USTR has received on a dozen occasions on issues ranging from clean energy manufacturing to cheese."

(24,544 posts)So we have a white millennial basically saying that he was an avid Sanders supporter and now he's not because of what he feels are the flimsiness of Sanders' policies and the far too frequent and far too often unhinged reactions of his supporters.
If this was one person, it'd only be kind of interesting. But the Internet is full of people saying that the reaction of some of Sanders' supporters are his greatest liability.
BlueMTexpat
(15,369 posts)I find that to be 100 percent the case. The anti-HRC mob mentality that I see here on DU is frightening and it's a MAJOR turn-off.
Of course, the moment I - or anyone else - remark about that, people jump on us and call us "condescending" at best or unprintable at worst (and I likely don't see even half of what is said to/about me because I now have so many posters on Ignore).
Then there is the immediate swarm of comments about how awful HRC's supporters are towards Bernie when that is simply NOT at all the case with the overwhelming majority of HRC supporters on this site.
Bernie's ideas are great. I wish that they could be implemented for us all, but his details on implementation are sketchy - to say the least. I love that he is a candidate and am proud that he is a Dem candidate. He is just not my candidate. Period.

This is a clear illustration of what it can be like on the other side of the candidate divide. Can't say I endorse all of what this person says, but it mirrors much of what the Sanders camp has complained about, in this case, from the opposite side.
I happen to think that O'Malley has the most detailed policy plans, but I also found many of the issue pages on Sanders' website awash in rhetoric and short on actual policy plans. I do understand that his congressional record has better specifics. Still...

(16,380 posts)How original. "I supported Bernie. But then his supporters."
At least come up with some new lines.

(56,582 posts)Pretty much like this post said: "break up the banks" could be good or really really bad depending on what that actually means, and I'm not really interested in chest-thumping about it that doesn't have those specifics.

(54,386 posts)It didn't quite sound like the contrived stuff shills sometimes come up with, so I read the whole thing. It SOUNDED genuine, but I still couldn't quite convince myself, although it could just as easily have been me at 21. I started my senior year in college at that age, and could read and write, after all.
But then further down, a veteran Kossack had apparently taken the trouble to check out and vet the poster, and found him to be for real.

Scratch thatmahakali overdrive has assured me that the diarist is exactly who he claims to me. She says she has unassailable proof, and thats good enough for me. Shes a renown sockpuppet and zombie catcher, and also firmly in the Bernie camp. (My apologies to Hatrax for misunderstanding his PM offer.)

(54,386 posts)All I did was find a post on DK that was out there for anyone to read. I'm currently in Dallas recuperating from a knee operation. Believe me, I had the time!!
In the meantime, my wife had to return to Germany. She had been in the USA 89 days out of the last 180, and would have had to apply for a visa to stay with me during my recuperation. As it is, the idiots from CBP detained her when we landed in Atlanta on December 26th, because they saw she had spent more time in the USA than usual. They asked her what "work" she was planning to do while she was here. What oafs. Her passport was stamped with entries into the USA EVERY December 26th for the last 10 years, and she had her return ticket with her. She is 63!!! What "work" did they think she was gong to engage in, clandestine baby-sitting?
Anyway, she refused to beg the US authorities for any visa, and went home as planned, not overstaying her allotted time as a tourist. After all, we can't have Germans spending any more money into the US economy than can be helped, right?
So if you know a way to sneak her back over here to me without anyone noticing, I'd be happy to accept that. In absence of that, I was glad to go find the post--not exactly the most demanding of tasks. By the way--beware of offering baked goods to any man married to a German woman. You have a VERY high bar to compete with!

(54,386 posts)You just had to wade through a ton of posts to find it. But it was posted by a trusted Sanders supporter on DK, and one who was apparently adept at rooting out phonies. Ergo, the post was apparently legit, and the good Sanders supporters on DK acknowledged it.
