The Nation magazine endorses Sanders

Sanders "has summoned the people to a 'political revolution,' arguing that the changes our country so desperately needs can only happen when we wrest our democracy from the corrupt grip of Wall Street bankers and billionaires," the magazine's editors say. "We believe such a revolution is not only necessary but possible -- and that's why we're endorsing Bernie Sanders for president."

At first blush, the announcement seems like a no brainer. The fiercely liberal magazine and the Democratic socialist presidential candidate go together like peanut butter and jelly.

But it is, in some respects, a surprise. The magazine, founded more than 150 years ago, has only endorsed candidates during primaries twice before. Until now the results have been 50-50: it endorsed Jesse Jackson in 1988 and Barack Obama in 2008.

The magazine's editors acknowledge Hillary Clinton's strengths but say "the limits of a Clinton presidency are clear."

They argue that "Sanders's approach" to foreign policy "is different and better," and that on domestic issues Sanders is "a candidate who can truly walk the walk."

and lions roar.

Socialist magazine editors endorse socialist candidates.

Surely no one was waiting on the edge of their seats for this endorsement. No matter how The Nation's editors portray their decision in this, there was no way they could have brought themselves to endorse Clinton with my man Bernie in the game.

There are other endorsements of far bigger value.

...that means the Nation isn't an objective source for the foreseeable future, but their progressive choice leaves a lot of room for agreement.

One disagreement:

"the limits of a Clinton presidency are clear."

I think the parameters of a Sanders presidency are also 'unclear.' He's just as untested in the executive role, while Clinton at least has that experience heading a large government agency which also gives her foreign policy chops (whether you agree or not with the policies she promoted in favor of the Obama presidency).

But Sanders' candidacy is obviously a good opportunity for the magazine to promote their progressive agenda.

Yes H. Clinton has been tested but she has done poorly. Remember when she made the Iraq War mistake. She chose to side with the hated Republicons. She failed that test. WE NEED CHANGE.

...I don't remember much of what Sanders did AFTER that vote to regulate, manage, or end that occupation - both senators voted repeatedly to fund the thing, to the consternation of those of us clamoring for Congress to stifle Bush's made-up mandate. The subsequent funding votes were Congress' most important lever in confronting Bush on his occupation, and both failed that test for me.

Hillary did serve on the Senate Armed Forces Committee and made dozens and dozens of efforts to hold the administration accountable for their conduct in Iraq.

although when it comes to the future nothing is completely clear there are still indicators..

Hillary's refusal to break up the Wall Street banks that have become large a powerful enough to take down the economy. Prior to the Reagan revolution which opened the door for 3rd way politics, allowing bankers to have this kind of power would be an unacceptable situation in the Democratic party.

Hillary's a war hawk. Just her vote for invading Iraq without bothering to read intelligence reports is a red flag. Selling billions of dollars of military hardware to Algeria etc...

Flip flopping on universal health care for all Americans and lying about the cost. She knows better than this, but there's the health insurance industry and drug companies shelling out lots of money and they expect results...

He had the same hurdle...People thought he was just a leftvwing ideological blowhard who had no clue of how to govern when he was elected by a fluke.

But he rolled up his sleeves and proved that he was an excelkent executive who could organize coalitions, hire goid people and get oractical things done. He consistently was reelected as mayor after that. He even had the admiration of republicans.

Yes the US is not a small city. But the same basic executive qualities and skillsets apply to both positions.
